Rett rides solo this week and asks about subverting game design elements to strengthen your theme or deliver a message. Then he takes a spin in to talking about popular story structure, such as JK Rowling’s 7 point plot structure.
This week, we discuss some new VR Tech, specifically the Pimax 5k (reviewed on Craft Computing here), and computer hardware because Rett is going to CES next week! Then we deep dive into things to consider when developing a game character. We read this article which inspired us to think about what makes a character stand out. Let us know your approach when designing a character!
Rett is back from Reno, and he listened to a lot of Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History podcast. Taylor and Rett share how their passion of history formed and how it informs their drive for more knowledge. Taylor shares more about catlike coding, and art tutorials from @achebit.
Pivoting from talking history, they talk about Chris Avellone and his impact on storytelling in the industry. Rett shares his love of writing. And the Oregon Ducks made it to the final four (spoilers: they didn’t get much further).
Goals for next week: Create developer log when programming Taylor – 15 minutes of free writing / journaling – artprompts.org Rett – Create a pixel art character (and animate if possible)
This was recorded the same week that Game Dev’s Quest launched! (to give a peak behind the curtains.) Taylor and Rett talk about launching the show, and podcasting in general. And they bought tickets to fly to Japan.
Rett binged on Writing Excuses, a podcast dedicated to helping people learn the craft of writing. And Taylors spends some time with Monument Valley.
As far as coding goes they focus on putting the finishing touches on the intro into their console RPG, and add some color to the recently added ASCII art.
Rett challenges Taylor to stay away from the news.
