This week, ManBeardGames is Rett, Mattyk1ns is Taylor, and Taylor is a distant memory being remembered. Or something like that….
We hear updates on what everyone has been working on over the last few months and some of the struggles that have come with that. Then, we discuss what it takes to get a job as a developer, games we have been playing, and finally, we brainstorm some ideas to enhance the GDQ community.
Taylor and Rett share their distaste for the holidays and holiday traditions. Taylor had some unity issues to sort out. Rett was busy and doing some writing. They’ve been listening to more coffee with butterscotch. Then they talk about brainstorming for the upcoming game jam (that already happened for those following along!)
Plus the guys have picked up Pillars of Eternity and been plucking a long!
This week on GDQ, Rett and Taylor rehash the work they did implementing black jack into their C# text adventure game. They realize that without Humble Bundle, Game Dev’s Quest would never have come into existence. Other topics include purchasing tickets to the Enjoy GameDev conference hosted by Gamkedo, finalizing travel details for Japan, ways to create VR apps, and shortening the 40 hour work week.
Taylor’s Challenge: Watch Midnight Diner, research C# delegates, events, and threading.
Team Challenge: Meet twice this week.
Rett went cave diving in Bend, and Taylor’s apartment almost caught on fire. They talk about being happy with what you have and the allure of what you don’t. The discussion includes success as an indie dev, being lied to growing up, managing finances, and monetizing your skills.
They broach the topic of philosophy and the Philosophize This! podcast along with Taylor feeling down about game dev and getting a nice pick up. Also, Mentor Mondays was actually a thing this week.
Shoutout to JulianToker for a cool twitch stream, awesome gaming community and new podcast Cheerful Ghost, and our buddy Kurt Berning for being our buddy!
Rett and Taylor talk about retro video games and their favorite recent indies, as well as progress they made on their Japan trip. Rett describes his first experience with Virtual Reality and they discuss some cool possibilities with VR and AR.
Rett’s Challenge: Work on Brick Breaker from the Udemy Course
Taylor’s Challenge: Play classic games, set up emulator on Raspberry Pi
Rett and Taylor talk about their progress on the Iceberg game this week. They discuss some game ideas they came up with after generating 10 ideas per day. They also talk about staying inspired and becoming healthy.
