This week, Rett and Taylor don’t talk about politics. Really. Topics range from the impending eclipse, preparation for their Japan trip, pets, and most importantly, gamedev. They dissect how they might be able to make their game Castle Master Faster Blaster a mobile game using Unity and some of the challenges, benefits, and draw backs.
Taylor and Rett talk about riding motorcycles, the upcoming Dota 2 International (already happened at this point), the upcoming Dark Tower movie, North Korea missile tests.
Then on the development side of things, they discuss finalizing their game jam game, Castle Master Faster Blaster, and shipping that to mobile. And Taylor shares info about his security training at work.
Taylor and Rett share their distaste for the holidays and holiday traditions. Taylor had some unity issues to sort out. Rett was busy and doing some writing. They’ve been listening to more coffee with butterscotch. Then they talk about brainstorming for the upcoming game jam (that already happened for those following along!)
Plus the guys have picked up Pillars of Eternity and been plucking a long!
This week on GDQ, Rett and Taylor rehash the work they did implementing black jack into their C# text adventure game. They realize that without Humble Bundle, Game Dev’s Quest would never have come into existence. Other topics include purchasing tickets to the Enjoy GameDev conference hosted by Gamkedo, finalizing travel details for Japan, ways to create VR apps, and shortening the 40 hour work week.
Taylor’s Challenge: Watch Midnight Diner, research C# delegates, events, and threading.
Team Challenge: Meet twice this week.
Rett and Taylor discuss the 10,000 hours to become a master rule, sharing their doubts and asking how this applies to gamedev. They analyse the average life expectancy in the US and apply these numbers to their own lives, asking the question if you are late to the game, is there still hope? All this and more on this week’s episode!
This episode was recorded in preparation for Episode 18: Rockzom with a different audio setup so quality may vary.
Rett went cave diving in Bend, and Taylor’s apartment almost caught on fire. They talk about being happy with what you have and the allure of what you don’t. The discussion includes success as an indie dev, being lied to growing up, managing finances, and monetizing your skills.
They broach the topic of philosophy and the Philosophize This! podcast along with Taylor feeling down about game dev and getting a nice pick up. Also, Mentor Mondays was actually a thing this week.
Shoutout to JulianToker for a cool twitch stream, awesome gaming community and new podcast Cheerful Ghost, and our buddy Kurt Berning for being our buddy!

Rett and Taylor discuss motivation and a break through they made this week. They worked on a World War II sidescroller game together and Taylor crushed some bricks making his very own brick breaker game. They talk about his experience streaming and bug hunting, as well as Rett’s love of Shadow of The Colossus and The Last Guardian, and Taylor’s love of Age of Empires.
Shoutout to rockzom, manbeardgames, and AuroraCaelestis for hanging out on stream!
Taylor challenged Rett to do an hour of Gamedev twice this week and Rett challenged Taylor to think of ways to use his pixel art in games.
Taylor and Rett are back with a packed week! This episode was recorded in 4 separate segments. On August 4th, in preparation for the Enjoy Game Dev Conference, they hosted the One-Mechanic-Game Jam, or OMGJam. They dissect their entry, then play and discuss the other entries.
Enjoy Game Dev was hosted on August 5th and was a fantastic time all around. All speakers were great. It was very motivational, informational, and most of all a fun time! Taylor took detailed notes, so make sure to look at the links below for everything that happened this week.
Rett saw Wonder Woman, so naturally Taylor and him talk about Hand Maid’s Tale…. and movies. The DC film universe is discussed. Which leads to story and narrative driven art. They share their favorite Pixar shorts. And their favorite story driven video games.
Another shout out to Rockzom for chilling (this episode was recorded way before he was on our show!) and to PixelPileDriver for giving some great pixel art tips on our live stream.
